A Living Moment

mdecker - How many older sisters will read X-Men books to their younger brother?  This was cute enough that I thought it would make a good picture for this week's topic.

Airport Homecoming - Cary
Olympus E-3 w/ 12-60mm @ 27mm, f/3.5 @ 1/50 sec, ISO 800
Matthew came home from his first year at BYU this past weekend.  This escalator shot was the only one that turned out well enough to post.  I had to fiddle with the white balance because the fluorescent lights below did not match the natural light hitting Benjamin from the side.  Tough to get them properly balanced.

Next Photo Challenge: Aperture
Take a photo where the choice of aperture (wide open, stopped down or somewhere in between) leads to the main element or impact of the image (shallow or deep depth of field, star points of light, etc.)

Natural Light Portrait

Abi Wallace - Cary
Olympus E-3 w/ 12-60mm @ 48mm, f/4 @ 1/400 sec, ISO 100

Rob & Sheri Wallace asked me to take the group photos for Afton & Kaylynne's Prom pictures this past weekend and Abi was my helper.  Before we got started, she helped me test out some locations and settings by being my model.  In this shot, her cousin was holding a diffuser between the sun and her so the sunlight on her face and upper body wasn't so harsh.  The azaleas in the Abbe's backyard were a nice background.  You can see the Prom pictures I took here, though for nearly all of these I used a bounce flash and a silver-gold reflector that Abi was holding.

Mom and Daughter on a Swing - Mike
34 mm, f/5.6, 1/160 sec. ISO 400

I took this picture of Lena and Lillie while the kids were enjoying the new airplane swing we built recently.  It was overcast, so the colors are a bit cool, but not harsh.  The other kids were playing and running around, so it was near impossible to get Lillie to look my way.

Waiting for Church - mdecker

Caleb was ready for church today way before it was time to leave.  I think he got a little bored.

Leading Lines

Liz - mdecker
I had a hard time coming up with a picture to fit the topic this week.  Finally decided on this one.

Conference Center Leading Lines - Cary
Olympus E-3 w/ 12-60mm @ 12mm, 1/320 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 100

I, too, had a hard time thinking of a subject for this theme but since I was in Salt Lake for Conference, I thought that the lines coming out of the Conference Center after a session might work.  I found a good spot where the gaps for the waterfall lead one's eye to the spire and then heavenward.

Logs and Trees - Mike
Nikon D5300, ISO 800, f/3.5, 1/1000 sec, 32 mm

I also found the topic more challenging than I expected.  Saw Keith balancing on these logs at Camp Binachi and thought it would provide an interesting portrait.

For Next Week: Natural Light Portrait
No flash allowed.

"Pink Dogwood" - Cary
Olympus E-3 w/ 12-60mm @ 49mm, 1/50 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 100
One of my favorite barometers of the arrival of Spring in Vicksburg is a pink dogwood tree on Polk Street.  I was glad to get there this year before the blossoms were too far gone.

 Woodland Flower - Mike E
Nikon D5300, 240 mm, 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 400
I came across this pretty flower in the woods while following Wood Badge Participants during their conservation project, beginning to install a mountain bike trail around the lake at Camp Hood.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what type of flower it is.

I don't know why, but these types of pictures really intrigue me.  I boosted saturation to get the natural colors to show through, but otherwise didn't artificially color it.  Who knew there were so many colors in a puff of smoke?
